Let’s be real life moves fast. Some months feel like a blur of routines, work, relationships, and a hundred tiny to-dos. But here’s the thing: if we never pause to check in with ourselves, it’s way too easy to wake up one day and think, “Wait… how am I actually doing?”
That’s why I started doing a monthly emotional check-in. Think of it like a little self-audit not in a scary “spreadsheet” kind of way, but in a gentle, “how’s my heart doing?” kind of way. It helps me spot patterns, celebrate wins, and notice when I’m slipping into old habits.
And honestly? It takes 20–30 minutes tops. I usually grab my journal, light a candle (because vibes matter), and just let myself be honest.
Step 1: Pick Your “Check-In Day”
I like doing mine at the very end of the month or the very beginning of a new one. It feels symbolic closing a chapter before starting the next. But you can literally choose any day that feels right.
Pro tip: put it on your calendar. If it’s not scheduled, it’s easy to forget.
Step 2: Ask Yourself Honest Questions
Here are the questions I come back to every month. Don’t overthink your answers just write what comes to mind:
How have I been feeling overall this month? (drained, peaceful, anxious, hopeful… be real) What moments brought me joy? What drained my energy the most? What did I learn about myself? Where did I notice growth? What do I want to leave behind as I move into the next month? What’s one intention I want to carry forward?
Step 3: Notice Themes (Not Just Events)
The magic of doing this monthly is that patterns start to reveal themselves. Maybe you notice that every time you skip sleep, your mood tanks. Or that coffee dates with certain friends always leave you lighter.
Themes tell you what’s working and what’s not, so you can make intentional changes instead of just running on autopilot.
Step 4: End With Kindness
Here’s the part a lot of us forget: celebrate yourself. Maybe you got through a tough month. Maybe you took tiny steps toward healing. Maybe you simply showed up.
Write a little note to yourself, like you would to a friend:
“Hey, you handled a lot. I’m proud of you. Here’s to a fresh start next month.”
Trust me, that little bit of compassion matters more than we think.

Screenshot this template and fill it out it’s your space to reflect, release, and set an intention for the month ahead.
Final Thought!
A monthly check-in isn’t about being “productive” or “perfect.” It’s about giving yourself space to actually notice your inner world before life sweeps you away again.
So grab your journal, a pen, maybe some tea and just sit with yourself for a few minutes. Your future self will thank you.
